Our Story

So many seemingly random events had to align for Tristan and Abby to meet. Tristan was born and raised in Minnesota, while Abby grew up in Connecticut. After high school, Tristan enlisted in the Marine Corps, beginning six years of service that took him far from home. Meanwhile, Abby headed to Skidmore College to begin her undergraduate studies. Four years later, Abby was preparing to apply to graduate school, while Tristan was finishing his final deployment and planning his transition out of the Marines. Both stood at major crossroads, unaware that their next decisions would lead them to each other. As graduation approached, Abby faced a difficult choice: remain close to friends by attending Columbia or head to Cornell for a new adventure. A few months earlier, however, she had impulsively rescued a sled dog named Winter. Winter made the decision clear. Life in a busy city wouldn’t suit her, and so Abby chose Cornell — a decision that unknowingly set the stage for meeting Tristan. After leaving the Marines, Tristan also decided to return to school. However, without SAT scores or High School Transcripts that was hard. Until he found Syracuse University. That choice would ultimately lead him to Abby. The two met on Hinge. Anyone who knows Abby can probably guess her first response: she couldn’t understand how they matched when they lived an hour apart and were “obviously” never going to meet. But one random Sunday in October, Abby decided, “Why not?” and invited Tristan to visit her in Ithaca. While their official anniversary is November 11, in many ways, their story truly began the day they met.

Abby and Kaitlyn met Sophomore year of college in Organic chemistry. 

Fun fact: Kaitlyn is currently in PA school and lives in the same apartment building that Abby, Kate, and Dana used to live in.

Kate and Abby met at Cornell University. While in different programs their friendship began through dog playdates.

Fun Fact: Kate used to sleep in the living room of Tristan's apartment so that Abby didn't have to go to Syracuse alone.

Nadya and Abby met their freshman year of college and instantly clicked. They started a tradition with Gaby of going on spring break trips together every year. One of those trips resulted in the 3 evacuating Paris when COVID shut the world down. 
Fun Fact. Nadya is a national athlete for Indonesia.

Abby and Jess met at Skidmore College when Abby was a senior and Jess was a freshman. The two joked that Abby was her mother. Jess is currently getting her PHD in Physics at Duke. 

Fun Fact. Jess played on team USA softball in Israel.

Abby and Gaby met their freshman year of college. Along with Nadya they have traveled internationally together. 

Fun Fact. Gaby has come to VT on Colwell family vacations.

Abby and Dana met at Cornell where they were both in the MPH program. Dana currently works for Rochester University and the CDC. 

Fun fact. Abby was a bridesmaid in Dana's wedding.

Tanner is Tristan's younger brother. 

Fun Fact. Tanner played Lacrosse in College.

Alex and Tristan met on the swim team in High school. Fun fact. Tristan was a groomsman in Alex's wedding.

Alex is Abby's older brother. He can often be found buying heavy machinery off Facebook market place.  

Fun Fact. He is very passionate about concrete.

Josh and Tristan are childhood friends. They played football together throughout high school—Josh earned more college recruiting attention, while the Marines were Tristan's biggest offer. 

Fun fact: Josh was thrilled when he heard Tristan’s girlfriend was moving to Montana.
